On General Dynamics-AIS:
I have a lot of pride for all the different projects that GDAIS works on. I know in a small way that I’m a part of the projects that help keep the country safe. And when it comes to representing the U.S., I can’t even describe that feeling.
On being an Aspiring Olympic Athlete:
I started the steeplechase in college my sophomore year when it first became an NCAA event. I ran cross-country and track in high school and later in college. I really enjoy the steeplechase because you really have to focus on each barrier and it breaks up the race and makes it a little more challenging.
Everyone at GDAIS has been incredibly supportive. I’ve been given remote access so I can work from anywhere in the world, and I work a 30-hour-a-week schedule so that I have time to train. It’s been a great setup. The people on my team are also great. If there’s an article in the newspaper about one of my races, they’ll have it up on our door outside the next day.
“Flexibility” Programs
9/80 Schedule
Who hasn’t wished for a longer weekend? With our 9/80 work schedule, your wish just may come true. By lengthening your work week one hour each day, you can tip the work/life balance more in your favor and enjoy every other Friday off. When you interview with us, be sure to ask your manager if your group is eligible to participate in this flexible work schedule.
Paid Time Off
As a General Dynamics employee, flexibility is in your court. Our Paid Time Off (PTO) program combines vacation, sick, and personal leave into one bank that you can use at your discretion. New, fulltime employees accrue PTO at a rate of 14-18 days per year with the potential of earning more after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service. PTO accruals depend on your department.
Full-time, non-represented GDAIS staff can purchase additional Paid Time Off (PTO) in order to further achieve a desired work/life balance. Employees can realize the benefits of having additional flexibility through receiving additional PTO in a single installment while paying for this leave over multiple pay periods through payroll deduction. Eligible employees can purchase up to 40 hours of additional PTO as new hires during the first 31 calendar days of employment and each subsequent Annual Enrollment period. Interested employees in turn agree to pay for the cost of this leave over the remaining pay periods of the calendar year and use it by the end of that same calendar year for which it was bought (except where prohibited by state regulation).
Flexible Work Schedules
Not everyone can work 9 to 5. If your life needs a different balance, we offer flexible schedules. Note that these schedules are dependant on business needs and require your manager’s approval.
Family & Health
Adoption Assistance
Expanding your family through adoption? We’ll help by reimbursing you for adoption-related expenses, up to $4,000 per child.
Day Care Discounts
Quality day care can be essential for today’s working family. At some of our locations, we offer discounted rates at specific daycare centers.
Gym Reimbursement Program
All of us could benefit from regular exercise. That’s why some or our sites offer reimbursement for yearly gym memberships. Check with manager to see if this perk is available to you.
Community Involvement
Community Affairs
At General Dynamics, we’re committed to the communities in which we live and work. Whether it means building homes for our neighbors, assisting local competitions among high school engineering students, or sponsoring cultural events, we’re united in our desire to improve our communities. As a company, we support non-political, non-religious, non-profit organizations focused on primary or secondary math, science, technology, and engineering education. We also assist military-focused charitable organizations. Local sites manage our community relations and philanthropy programs. These sites support local K-12 schools, local non-profits, and local branches of national non-profits, primarily in educational, military, and civic areas.
National Engineers Week
Teachers have had a remarkable influence on us all. Think you’d like to give it a try? During National Engineers Week, General Dynamics employees across the country teach students about science, engineering, and, of course, General Dynamics. This year, 24 proposals were selected by the community affairs review board.
I wanted to work for a defense contractor, and I had heard really good things about General Dynamics. I knew it was a solid company doing important work for the government. And, from a professional development standpoint, it was a place where I could really apply my skills and experiences.
On Creating Fireworks
Being able to entertain people and share that feeling with an audience is a thrill. I have a ten-person pyrotechnics crew called the "Boom Brothers" (we have a few sisters, too) and they work with me to put fireworks shows together.
It can take two full days to set up the equipment, place the charges and wire the electronics. We do shows for many different events and occasions: The Fourth of July, of course, at sporting events, amusement parks, company picnics, family reunions. I’d do it for free because it’s so much fun, but the nominal fees we charge help cover the costs of the pyrotechnics. I sell complete shows, do all the choreography, and am the one pressing all the buttons. That’s the best part! Makes me feel like a kid again.
I think General Dynamics is a company that does valuable work to meet key national requirements to support the defense and intelligence communities within our government. The programs are crucial to our nation’s security, so there’s an importance attached to the work that we perform.
On Work/Life Balance
It’s important to focus, set priorities, and establish boundaries for yourself. I think that’s kind of hard for many of us to do in a lot of areas. We want to do everything and then realize we can’t. I’ve found that the more I try to balance life and work myself, the more comfortable my team members feel doing it. If employees have a boss who spends every waking hour in the office, they feel obligated to do the same. You know, one of the things that my employees have always told me when I do performance reviews is they just really appreciate that work-life balance, whether they have kids or not. We try to leave at a respectable hour. I encourage it, and we still get the job done. I try to prioritize my workload so that I don’t have to rely on others and inconvenience others outside of the normal workday.
